Granite Surface Plates
Every linear measurement depends on an accurate reference surface from which final dimensions are taken. Starrett
Precison Granite Surface Plates provide this reference plane for work inspection and work layout. Their high degree
of flatness, overall quality and workmanship also make them ideal bases for mounting sophisticated mechanical,
electronic and optical gaging systems.
When a surface plate is to be used as a reference and measuring surface, always choose a quartz granite. If the
plate is to be used primarily for load carring, a non-quartz or black gabbro granite may be chosen
Grade AA - Laboratory Grade - specified for precision operations in constant temperature gaging rooms and
metrology departments
Grade A - Inspection Grade - typically specified for general work in quality control
Grade B - Toolroom Grade - this is typically specified for production checking work through the shop
Overall flatness tolerance is based on unilateral measurement. All points on the work surface shall be contained
between two parallel planes separated at a distance no greater than the amount specified for each particular
grade and size as shown
Certified Accuracy - before shipment each surface plate must pass a critical final inspection to prove that its entire
surface is within the specified tolerance
